Do Not Sell the Next Step. Agree It.

A calendar invitation is not evidence of progress.

Buyer and salesperson agreeing the purpose of a follow-up conversation.

During call reviews, I sometimes hear a salesperson end a conversation with:

“Shall I send you a calendar invite?”

The meeting gets booked. But that does not automatically mean the opportunity has progressed.

A prospect may accept because they are interested, polite, uncertain or simply willing to hear more. Those reasons do not create the same quality of next step.

A Booked Meeting Is Not the Same as a Meaningful Next Step

When coaching a call, I prefer to look at whether both sides can explain why another conversation should happen.

A meaningful next step has a shared purpose. The prospect and salesperson understand what was learned, what still needs to be clarified and what continuing the conversation should achieve.

Before ending the call, the salesperson should be able to confirm:

  • what was understood about the current situation;
  • which issue or opportunity deserves further exploration;
  • what the next conversation should achieve;
  • who needs to participate;
  • what information or preparation will make the meeting useful.

Summarise Before You Schedule

A concise summary can make the difference.

By summarising what was heard and asking the prospect to confirm or correct it, the salesperson checks whether both sides are carrying the same understanding forward.

Only then does the next question become useful:

“Based on this, does another conversation make sense?”

That changes the dynamic.

The next step is not sold. It is agreed.

Agreement Improves the Handover

When another colleague will join or take over, the quality of the handover becomes part of the customer experience.

Useful notes should capture the prospect’s language, the agreed purpose of the next conversation and the questions that remain open. They should not simply confirm that the required CRM fields were completed.

A clear handover prevents the prospect from having to restart the conversation and allows the next colleague to continue from the level of understanding already established.

A strong next step is specific, relevant and mutual.

It is not the reward for completing the call structure. It is the result of both sides deciding that continuing has value.
